Nutrition

The Department of Nutritional Sciences offers undergraduate nutrition related programs in Nutrition Science, Dietetics, and Wellness. All majors take a core of courses that include physical and biological sciences, as well as liberal arts and humanities, providing graduates with a strong educational foundation and excellent career preparation. NDHM graduates are in high demand in a variety of health-related, hospitality, and foods industry careers.

The Dietetics option is approved by the American Dietetic Association as academic preparation for a career in dietetics. The Nutrition Science option is designed to prepare students for health professional schools, such as, medical, dental, and physical therapy.

The Wellness option is designed to prepare students for successful career entry into the broad health and wellness professions. The combination of these areas within a single department facilitates integrative studies for the purpose for understanding and developing professional skills for careers in education, industry, government and business.

*Pre-dietetic students must formally apply to the DPD program, upon completion of the admissions requirement coursework.

I would say that Nutrition Science connects health and diet. What we're about is informing people across the lifecycle as it were about their nutritional needs.

Throughout my time here in the College of Human Sciences, I've had an abundance of opportunities that have helped me grow as a person and as a leader and hopefully I can impact society in a positive way.

What were offered, us here at Auburn, is a Pre-health major. A lot of our students will move on to go to professional schools upon completion of that program. Our pre-health option is Nutrition Science, we also have Nutrition and Dietetics that leads to the Licensure Examination for registered dietitians. And then we have a third track, which is nutrition and wellness. So you may find a lot of these students going on to work in hotels to work for private corporations, to work in hospitals, and so on.

Our Nutrition Dietetic students have 100% placement rate with their chosen schools, and they have 100% pass rate on the RD exam. So the students are really well prepared to go out and become a registered dietician.

In the nutrition Sciences program, I feel like I've learned a lot about nutrition and that's really prepared me for professional school, whether it be nutritional biochemistry, macronutrients and vitamins and minerals. They've given me a really solid understanding of the human body and how it works, which is preparing me to take the next step. My ultimate goal is to be a physical therapist and to help people recover from injury. From Nutrition Sciences, I think will really give me a firm foundation going into that field.
